GREENSBORO, N.C. - A total of 294 North Carolina student-athletes earned spots on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll for 2004-05, as announced recently by ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford. The number is a record for the Tar Heels, who placed representatives from all 28 varsity squads on the list.

"I applaud the hard work of these 294 Tar Heels," said Dick Baddour, UNC Director of Athletics. "It's great to see our student-athletes excelling in their rigorous academic work even as they put a lot of time into representing Carolina in athletic competition. I'm especially pleased that our overall total is the highest it's ever been, and we want to see that number continue to climb."

Across the conference, 2,236 student-athletes were named to the list, an all-time high for the league. The honor requires participation in a varsity sport and a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the academic year. Duke led the ACC with 376 honorees and UNC was second. Trailing the Tar Heels were Maryland (252), Virginia (232), Clemson (204), NC State (183), Florida State (168), Virginia Tech (156), Wake Forest (130), Miami (126) and Georgia Tech (115).

Among those honored for UNC were 2005 NCAA champions Byron Sanders and Melvin Scott from the men's basketball team and Courtney Bumpers from gymnastics. Carolina's ACC championship squads were well-represented, with field hockey placing 10 on the list, wrestling five and women's basketball three.

Twenty-one Tar Heels earned the honor for the fourth time in their careers.
