James & Erndl Qualify For Finals At U.S. Open

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.--University of North Carolina junior Jeff James of Chapel Hill, N.C., and 2001 UNC alumna Erika Acuff Erndl qualified for the finals Friday morning at the U.S. Open at the University of Minnesota's Aquatics Center.

Erndl finished 17th in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:00.76 and James was 23rd in the 100-meter backstroke in 58.24 seconds.

James placed 20th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 57.65, just four one-hundredths of a second off his career best time in the event. Erndl placed 20th in the 200-meter freestyle at 2:02.76 and both earned spots Friday night in the "C" final.

Other UNC swimmers in action Friday included freshman Layne Brodie who was 34th in the women's 100-meter breaststroke at 1:14.03, senior Brad Mitchell who was 35th in the men's 100-meter breastsroke in 1:07.28 and junior Ashley Howard who was 43rd in the women's 100-meter backstroke in 1:04.91.

Carolina will have a full day of competitors in action on Saturday, the final day of U.S. Open competition.

Erika Erndl, Sarah Tanner and Layne Brodie will compete in the prelims of the 200-meter individual medley for women. Tyler Harris and Andy Brake will be in the prelims of the men's 200-meter individual medley. Rebecca Kane will be in the prelims of the women's 50-meter freestyle. Whitney Sprague will compete in the timed final of the women's 1500-meter freestyle. Chip Peterson, Joe Kinderwater and Wil Singley will compete in the timed final of the men's 800-meter freestyle.
