FRESHMAN (2006)
One of the nation's top rookie catchers • Earned first-team Freshman All-America honors from Baseball America and was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball • Was key in the Tar Heels' postseason run, earning a spot on the all-tournament team at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and the All-College World Series team • Saw action in 67 games, mainly at catcher and designated hitter • Drove in a Carolina freshman record 62 runs • Hit .320 (80-for-250) with 12 home runs - the third most by a freshman in UNC history • Ranked third on the team in RBI and fourth in homers • Also scored 35 runs and slugged .532 • Outstanding defensive catcher with a .991 fielding percentage and just three errors • Threw out 14 of 30 base runners • Compiled 23 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI outings to rank fourth on the team in both categories • Hit .379 with runners on base and .403 with runners in scoring position • Had a season-best 10-game hitting streak from April 9-25 • Also hit safely in nine straight games from March 12-24 • Hit a team-best .692 (9-for-13) in the Chapel Hill Regional and batted .413 with four home runs and 14 RBI in the NCAA Tournament • Homered twice with and drove in seven runs in the College World Series • Went 5-for-5 with three doubles and a career-high five RBI in his third career game against Coastal Carolina Feb. 21 • Was 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBI against Boston College May 18 • Went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI against Winthrop June 3 • Was 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBI against Oregon State June 25 • Drove in three runs on four occasions • Posted nine games with three or more hits • Hit six home runs in and drove in 26 runs in ACC play. Summer 2006: Played with the USA National Team that went 28-2-1 en route to the FISU World Championship • Hit .226 (7-for-31) with seven RBI • Also pitched and did not allow an earned run and stuck out 10 in 5.2 innings.
