Carolina completes its season with a school-record 54 wins and its first-ever NCAA tournament runner-up finish. The Tar Heels entered the 2006 CWS with a 2-8 record in Omaha and are now 6-10 after a 4-2 mark this year. Head coach Mike Fox has been a part of all six of UNC's CWS wins as a coach or player.
Mike Cavasinni broke an 0-for-14 stretch with back-to-back singles in the fourth and fifth innings Monday. His single to left in the fifth off Jonah Nickerson tied the game at two, and he went on to single in the ninth and draw a walk in the seventh to reach base four times on the night.
With one-third of an inning Monday, Jonthan Hovis made his 38th appearance, which is tied for second on the Tar Heels' single-season list. He wraps up the season with an NCAA-best 1.17 ERA to become the first Tar Heel to claim a national ERA title since Derrick DePriest in 1999.
With an RBI double in the fifth, Seth Williams extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games. He was the only Tar Heel to hit safely in all six CWS games.
Daniel Bard was a tough-luck loser after allowing just one earned run on six hits over 7.2 innings. He walked just one and retired 13 straight Oregon State batters at one point.
With two strikeouts Monday, Daniel Bard now has 239 in his career, which is good for a tie for ninth on the UNC career list with Derrick Manning (1989-93).
Andrew Miller made his fifth career relief appearance and second in the CWS.
Carolina dropped back-to-back games to the same team for just the second time this season and first since losing two straight at Georgia Tech in March.
