Carolina Men's Golf Team Travels To ACC Championship
April 13, 2005 Chapel Hill, N.C. - TAR HEEL GOLF NOTES CAROLINA IN THE ACC TOURNAMENT: North Carolina will be going after its 13th ACC victory when the 52nd annual ACC Tournament begins this Friday and continues through Sunday at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. The Old North State Club features a par 72, 7,100-yard layout. This marks the ninth time the ACC Men's Golf Championship has been played at Old North State. The conference championship was also played there in 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Carolina won the team title in 1995 and 1996 while Tar Heel Mark Wilson was the individual medalist in 1996, Dustin Bray was the 2002 champion and Richard Treis was the 2003 individual champion. Carolina has won the conference championship, which began in 1954, 10 times. The Tar Heels have come away victorious in 1996, 1995, 1986, 1984, 1983, 1981, 1977, 1965, 1960 and 1956. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. each day. On Friday, the first wave of teams will be Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. The second wave of teams will be Florida State and NC State, the third wave will consist of Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia and the fourth wave will be Clemson, Maryland and Duke. TAR HEEL INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS: Thirteen Tar Heel golfers have captured the individual ACC Championship in the 50 years of the tournament's existence. Carolina's Richard Treis was the 2003 ACC champion, winning by two strokes with a five-under-par 211 total after firing rounds of 72-69-70. Other Tar Heel champions include Dustin Bray in 2002, Mark Wilson in 1996, Greg Parker in 1987, John Hughes in 1986, Davis Love III in 1984, John Inman in 1982, John Spelman in 1981, Marty West in 1971, John Baldwin in 1965, Pete Green in 1961, Bill Thornton in 1958 and Pryde Basinger in 1956. CAROLINA THIS SPRING: North Carolina's top finish so far this spring came in the first event of the spring campaign when Carolina posted a fourth-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Two Tar Heels carded top-five finishes as Martin Ureta tied for third place and Matt Crenshaw tied for fifth. The Tar Heels finished in sixth place in their most recent tournament, the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate where Jonathan Jackson tied for 11th place and Ted Smith tied for 20th. Carolina placed ninth at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational as Doug Kingston tied for 12th place and Smith tied for 16th. In Carolina's other two spring events, the Augusta State Invitational and Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational, the Tar Heels posted 13th-place finishes. Martin Ureta was low at the Augusta State Invitational where he tied for 11th place and Smith was low at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational, tying for 40th place. CAROLINA IN THE FALL: Carolina captured the team championship at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational and was the runner-up at the Duke Fall Classic. Three Tar Heels carded top-10 finishes at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational as Martin Ureta was the runner-up, Jonathan Jackson tied for third place and Reed Darsie tied for seventh. Ureta captured the individual championship at the Duke Fall Classic while teammate Matt Crenshaw placed fifth and Jackson tied for 13th place. In Carolina's other fall events, the Tar Heels finished 10th at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational and the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate and placed 15th at the William H. Tucker Invitational. Ureta was the low Tar Heel at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational where he finished third. He also tied for 10th place at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate and tied for 33rd at the William H. Tucker Invitational. THE TAR HEELS IN THE POLLS: Carolina is ranked 37th in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and sophomore Martin Ureta is ranked 40th in the individual rankings. CAROLINA'S ACC LINEUP: Carolina's lineup for this week's ACC Championship is as follows. Martin Ureta, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, holds down the number one spot. The other starters will be junior Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, junior Jonathan Jackson, from Chapel Hill, sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass. amd senior Doug Kingston from Bethlehem, Pa. URETA TOP PERFORMER FOR THE TAR HEELS: Martin Ureta, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, has carded six top-15 finishes this year. He is looking to regain the form he had in the fall when he posted four top-10 finishes, including three top-three finishes in the final three events of the fall campaign. Ureta captured the first individual championship of his collegiate career when he won the Duke Fall Classic by firing a six-under-par 210 total. He was the runner-up at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational, placed third at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational and tied for 10th place at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate, all played last fall. This spring, Ureta's top finish was a tie for 11th place at the Augusta State Invitational. This marks Ureta's second appearance in the ACC Championship as he also played in the 2004 event. SMITH BREAKS INTO LINEUP IN THE SPRING: Ted Smith, a junior from Westlake, Ohio, broke into the starting lineup this spring and has played in all five of Carolina's tournaments. He has posted three top-25 finishes. His top finish was a tie for 16th place at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. Smith tied for 20th at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate and tied for 25th place at the Augusta State Invitational. In last year's ACC Championship, Smith tied for 15th place individually. JACKSON COMING OFF STRONG SHOWING: Jonathan Jackson, a junior from Chapel Hill enjoying his first year on the Tar Heel squad, is coming off one of his best performances of the year, a tie for 11th place at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate. He has posted two additional top-15 finishes this year. Jackson tied for third place at last fall's Franklin Street Partners Invitational and tied for 13th at the Duke Fall Classic. SILVA'S THIRD APPEARANCE IN AT ACCs: Kevin Silva, a junior from New Bedford, Mass., has not missed starting in an ACC Championship since he arrived at Carolina. Silva is making his third start at the prestigious event. He tied for 19th place at last year's tourney and tied for 34th in 2003. Silva has played in four tournaments this year, including one as an individual. His top performance was a tie for 53rd place at the William H. Tucker Invitational. KINGSTON BREAKS INTO LINEUP: Doug Kingston, a senior from Bethlehem, Pa., broke into the starting lineup this spring and has played in four tournaments for the Tar Heels. His top showing was a tie for 12th place in the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in which he was the low Tar Heel in the event. CARLYLE POINT ON THE LINE: One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is a competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads in the competition, 11.5 to 6.5. The results and point breakdown can be found on TarHeelBlue.com. LAST YEAR'S ACC TOURNAMENT: Carolina finished in fifth place at last year's ACC Championship. Dustin Bray, who was the individual champion in 2002, was low for the Tar Heels as he tied for seventh place after firing a five-under-par 211 total. Ted Smith and Kevin Silva, who will both be playing in this year's event, both carded top-20 finishes as Smith tied for 15th place and Silva tied for 19th. Matt Crenshaw tied for 21st place while Martin Ureta signed an incorrect scorecard the first day, and thus did not qualify for the individual championship. ACC 50TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM: Six Tar Heels were selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Men's Golf Team in 2003. The 51-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the conference's 50th Anniversary Committee. Representing Carolina on the team are Tee Burton (1988-91), Frank Fuhrer (1978-81), Max Harris (1997-00), John Inman (1981-84), Davis Love III (1983-85) and Tom Scherrer (1990-92).
