Evan Sola Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

Feb. 7, 2005

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina junior 133-pounder Evan Sola claimed his second Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honor of the season Monday after posting a perfect 3-0 record, including two pins, in dual match action last week. Sola, who owns a team-best 24-3 record on the season, also shared the conference weekly honor on Jan. 4.

A winner of his last 12 bouts, Sola opened the week with a pin of Duke's Bryan Gibson in 4:31 to lead North Carolina to a 28-10 victory over the Blue Devils on Feb. 1. With the victory, the Tar Heels improved to 3-1 in ACC action.

Over the weekend, the junior from Wernersville, Pa., then pinned Zach Makovsky of Drexel in 4:08 to claim the victory at 133 pounds. He followed that performance with an 8-2 decision over Penn's Mike Silengo. Ranked No. 11 at 133 in the NWCA/InterMat rankings, Sola is now 11-0 in dual matches this season and has posted a career-best nine pins this season.

Sola and the Tar Heels are back in action this weekend as they welcome league newcomer Virginia Tech to Chapel Hill on Friday, February 11 in a match slated to begin at 7:30 pm. The match will be held in Fetzer Gym due to the UNC-Virginia Tech women's basketball game set for Carmichael Auditorium.
