Donna Andrews To Be Inducted Into Carolna Order Of Merit

Nov. 6, 2003

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Donna Andrews, a former member of the Carolina women's golf team and current star on the LPGA Tour, will be inducted into the Carolina Order of Merit this Friday evening at the annaul A.E. Finley Executive Cup Golf Tournament banquet. The Carolina Order of Merit was established in 1991 by the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics and Golf Program to honor former players, coaches, administrators and friends who have distinguished themselves in the game and for their overall contributions to the golf program at the University.

Andrews was a member of the Tar Heel team, 1986-89, and was selected second-team All-America in 1989. During her collegiate career, she captured one championship, the 1988 Lady Paladin Invitational. She also finished in third place at the 1989 NCAA Championship, the best finish ever by a Carolina player in that prestigious event. Her performance led Carolina to an eighth-place finish in the team race which equals Carolina's best NCAA finish. Andrews was a two-time champion of the North and South Amateur, capturing the title in 1984 and 1988. She was selected in 2003 to the Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Golf Team.

"Donna was a great asset to the team - always a team player," says former Tar Heel head coach Dot Gunnells who coached Andrews here at Carolina. "She was a pleasure to coach and graduated with honors in four years, a feat of which I am very proud."

Andrews, the current LPGA president, has been playing on the LPGA Tour since 1990. She has captured six LPGA championships, including the 1994 Nabisco Dinah Shore Championship. She is a two-time member of The Solheim Cup, 1994 and 1998. Andrews finished in the top three in the 1992 and 1993 U.S. Women's Open Championships, a truly remarkable accomplishment.

Former inductees into the Carolina Order of Merit include (year of induction): Jim Ferree (1991), Harvie Ward (1991), Chuck Erickson (1992), Bill Williamson (1992), Bobby Galloway (1993), Dot Gunnells (1994), Ed Kenney (1994), John Inman (1996), Davis Love, III (1997), Roger Perry (2001) and A.E.
