CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team earned a ranking of No. 9 in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll of the 2008 season, the IWLCA announced this week.

The Tar Heels jumped two spots from 11th to ninth after beating fourth-seeded Virginia on the road in the NCAA Tournament first round. Carolina dropped a 13-11 decision to fifth-seeded Syracuse in a national quarterfinal.

Four Atlantic Coast Conference schools grabbed spots in the top nine -- No. 3 Duke, No. 5 Maryland, No. 6 Virginia and No. 9 UNC.

Four-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was the unanimous choice for No. 1, followed by No. 2 Pennsylvania, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Syracuse, No. 5 Maryland, No. 6 Virginia, No. 7 Boston University, No. 9 Princeton, No. 9 UNC and No. 10 Georgetown.
